7 Energy-Saving Tips Written by An Electrician
With the cooler months well and truly setting in, we all seem to see an increase in those nasty energy bills. I thought I’d send you through these courtesy energy saving tips to help you save a dollar this Winter:
- Swap Energy Suppliers – Give your energy retailer a call and benchmark the price against other energy retailer prices.
- Energy-efficient lights – With the sun coming up later and going down earlier, the use of lighting in your home increases energy usage. Swapping light globes to LED (Light Emitting Diodes) can save you up to 70% on your energy costs.
- Hot water – When using a storage hot water system, make sure you’re using Off Peak energy. The retailer will be able to provide this information.
- Insulate the home – Keep the heat in by shutting curtains, use door snakes to stop draughts of cold air, seal cracks or gaps around windows, doors, chimneys, lay rugs to reduce heat loss and help insulate the area from underneath.
- Heating the Bed – The old hot water bottle to heat your bed and flannelette sheets vs your electric blanket sucking your dollars while you sleep. We’ll let you decide on that one.
- Small plug-in heater vs reverse cycle heater – We have all seen small electric heaters extremely cheap to buy, but be aware that they are up to 3 times more expensive to run than a reverse cycle heater.
- The obvious – Avoid the dryer and utilise a portable clothesline in a warm part of the home, cull the garage fridge and only heat areas with high people traffic.
